Melody walked into what was left of the park. "Oh my..." She said looking around. "Everything is ruined just like back home." She walked around taking in the damage. "I hope the rumors were true about survivors being here in New York or else I'm screwed." Melody heard that many survivors were starting to rebuild in New York so she had traveled all this way for the hope to rebuild her life. She climbed up on a big pile of rumble and sat down. She had been looking around for people for hours. "I'll need to find some food soon but right now I just need to rest." She laid back and closed her eyes.

The day was cold, but it was nothing the Irishman hadn’t experienced before. Besides, he enjoyed the crisp freshness the air seemed to have during the winter months, even at the end of the world, he was glad to see that hadn’t changed. Not that his earlier jog really left him much chance to enjoy it, nor did the habit he was about to indulge, pulling out one of what few cigarettes remained in his battered pack. He really shouldn’t be doing this – withdrawal was one of the things that really made him go mad, and he was running low – yet he lifted the stick to his lips regardless and lit up, letting loose a deep sigh of content.
After a few drags, he opened his eyes and gazed at the city from where he leant against one of the few standing trees. It was mess, this once great city reduced to nothing but rubble and silence. It made him briefly wonder just how well his own homeland had fared, but he quickly shook the thought from his mind. The human race were, after all, a tenacious lot; he was sure he would be back to walking greener pastures in no time at all. And if anyone needed to know anything about the countries of the world, or weather conditions (or even some knowledge of food-groups and healthy eating), well, he was here.
Inhaling his last, Matt stubbed out his cigarette against the bark of the tree (Sorry, mate), and headed off in no particular direction. He had entertained hopes of finding other ‘survivors’ like in the movies, but had lost count of the days spent in solitude. So, when he saw movement from the corner of his eye (no pun intended), he had to look twice before recognising the distinctly human shape atop a pile rubble. He jogged over, calling out as he did so, “Hey there!” And then, worried teacher (how many of his students decided to do something stupid on trips?) taking over: “Are you sure it’s safe for you to be up there?”

At first Melody thought she was dreaming. She heard a man's voice calling to her. Then she realized where she was and jerked up causing some of the rubble to fall off the pile. It scared her and she jumped a little. She looked up and noticed a man standing near. "So I wasn't dreaming." Melody laughed nervously. "Well when I first got up here I was sure but now not so much."

He couldn't help but let out a little chuckle, that was, after the concern that he had possibly made her stumble and fall to not-quite-certain-death had vanished. And after he had hopped out of the way of some of the falling rubble. That was kinda close.
Straining his ear, he tried to catch what first came from her mouth, but couldn't quite; something about dreams, anyway. Well, maybe dreams were much more fun than the current reality. Except, he did have a worrying number of dreams about zombies... Hopefully this wasn't one of those apocalypses.
Matt grimaced at the girl's revelation. The choice of words would have been funny, were it not for the semi-precarious situation. Well, maybe they could laugh later. "So, do you want to come down, or would you like to stay up there?" Really, the last part was a joke, but he had seen far to many students too terrified to climb back down a tree. "I'm here if you need help, anyway..." Bracing to catch, should the situation call for it.

Melody laughed for two reasons. The first was about what he said. The second reason she was laughing at herself. How silly of her to become scared of heights. Since when had she ever been scared of heights. I guess huge disasters could do things to you. She shook her head of her thoughts. "I would definitely like to come down." Melody slowly and carefully climbed down. Her foot slipped a few times but she caught herself and was fine. When she was a few feet above the ground she jumped down and dusted herself off. "That's better. And thanks for the offer."

Well, his help here was obviously not needed right now; still, didn't stop him from keeping an eye (again, no pun) on the young lady as she climbed down from the somewhat precarious height. The man couldn't help but flinch each time her foot slipped and he braced himself even more for her potential fall.
Luckily, she managed to get down alright and Matt breated a small sigh of relief before turning his attention to the now grounded (and safe) woman. "You're more than welcome." He awarded her a large, toothy grin (no, he was not a creep). "It's nice to meet you, ah, at ground level." Offering his hand, he kept the (friendly!) smile in place as he introduced himself. "Nam'es Matt, by the way. I hope you don't mind me asking but, what's one as young as yourself..." Well, he was assuming she was young; she certainly looked it to him. "...doing wandering around on her own? It's not entirely safe." Ah, concerned lecturing teacher: he had that tone of voice down to a 'T'.

Melody smiled back and took his hand. "It's nice to finally meet someone else. My name is Melody." She shook his hand. Melody's smile got bigger. She had finally found another survivor. She was overjoyed. Being alone all this time has been awful and she would had given up soon of not for this chance encounter. Melody shook her head. "No I don't mind you asking. Well I came to New York to find survivors. I didn't find any back home. I've been alone ever since the disaster..." She said sadly looking down at the ground. She tried composing herself. She didn't want her emotions to get the better of her especially in front of someone she just met. She took a breath to calm herself and looked back at him. "What about you Matt?"

MAtt's grin matched the young lady's as they shook hands. "Melody. What a lovely name." It was e to meet someone else, he had to admit, and a pretty girl at that. But her change in mood had him frowning and he suddenly felt a protective instinct rise in his chest along with a small spike of worry; if she had not managed to find survivors in her hometown...
"I'm sorry to hear that. Where are you from originally?" Of course, there was the chance that some places were hit harder than others, but if that was the case, then some places might not have experienced so much damage. There was always a ray of hope.
Still, he felt pity for this woman. He could imagine what it must have felt like to be alone - he had been alone himself, after all, and in a strange country, no less. "I hope you weren't too scared, being all alone in the middle of this." His tone was soft; gentle and comforting, but it changed to somewhat reminiscent as he thought of her question towards him.
"I've been alone as well. I'm not actually from the States, haha. Though I don't have anyway of finding out how Ireland's fared during all this." He didn't want to depress the mood too much, so he scratched the back of his head awkwardly and grinned at Melody. "But, we should look forward! I'm sure we'll be alright! And I'm sure there are more survivors! Everything'll be okay, you'll see." Of course he had no way of knowing, but moping never helped anyone.

"Thank you." Melody said with a smile. "I love my name. I thought it was the most unique about me. Don't know any other Melodys." Melody has always loved her name since she learned it. It matched her so well considering she loved music and to sing. It fit her perfectly. "I'm originally from Florida. We were hit pretty bad. I lost both my parents so I'm on my own now. I'm lucky I got out of there." Melody let out a small sigh. This was always going to be a hard subject to talk about but what's done is done. She needed to move on. "Oh, from Ireland. That's very cool. I hope it's better than my home." She smiled a small smile at what he said. "You are right. The past is the past and being negative about it won't help us." She nodded with agreement.
